A new species of flowering plant, Begonia nyishiorum, has been identified in Arunachal Pradesh's East Kameng district, India.
The discovery, announced in the journal Novon, was made during an expedition from July 2024 to January 2025.
The team, including forest officials and local Nyishi residents, explored dense, high-altitude forests.
Begonia nyishiorum is distinguished by its crimson-fringed petioles and thrives in moist, shaded mountain slopes.
The species' name honors the Nyishi community for their role in protecting the forests.
Forest officials plan to map additional populations and assess habitat stability.
This discovery underscores the rich biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas and the importance of conservation efforts.
