The Second Environmental Court of Chile has reaffirmed the protected status of the Río Cochiguaz Nature Sanctuary in the Coquimbo region in 2025.
The court's decision supports the Ministry of the Environment's original declaration, confirming that it was appropriately justified and in accordance with existing environmental legislation. This ruling dismisses claims from landowners whose properties are located within the sanctuary's boundaries.
Spanning approximately 49,315 hectares, the sanctuary is recognized for its rich biodiversity, vital ecosystem services, high Andean wetlands, glaciers, and diverse array of flora and fauna, including species currently under conservation protection. The area also encompasses significant archaeological and cultural heritage sites.
