Bacalar Lagoon: Judge Suspends Military Construction Amid Environmental Concerns - Updated May 2025

A federal judge in Quintana Roo, Mexico, has definitively suspended construction of a rest house for the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) near the Bacalar Lagoon. The judge in Chetumal upheld a previous suspension from April after Sedena defied it and continued building.

The court's decision follows legal action initiated by residents concerned about the environmental impact. The construction, which began in February without the necessary permits, has faced strong opposition due to potential damage to the lagoon's delicate ecosystem.

The Ministry of National Defense is constructing what they say will be a rest home for military personnel. Community pressure has resulted in a temporary hold on the waterfront project. Residents are demanding answers regarding the exemption of environmental permits for Sedena's project, arguing that it has already caused evident environmental damage.
