Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

Fifteen Special Areas of Conservation and seventeen Special Protection Areas within Crete's Natura 2000 network are slated for increased protection. This initiative, backed by a study approved by the Regional Council of Crete, aims to safeguard the island's unique biodiversity and ecosystems.

The study encompasses 31 areas within the Natura 2000 network, totaling 203,682.50 hectares, with 162,457.89 hectares (79.76%) terrestrial and 41,224.61 hectares (20.24%) marine. The primary objective is to conserve habitats and species within these designated sites.

Measures include defining protection and management zones, addressing habitat and species pressures, and establishing specific regulations for terrestrial and marine biodiversity. The initiative also emphasizes sustainable development and integrating environmental considerations across sectors.
