Tungurahua Volcano Geopark Declared UNESCO Global Geopark

The Tungurahua Volcano Geopark in Ecuador has been officially designated a UNESCO Global Geopark. This recognition by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) acknowledges a 13-year collaborative effort. The geopark features 20 geosites and six volcanoes.

Spanning 2,397 square kilometers, the geopark includes attractions like the Chimborazo and El Altar volcanoes. Other notable sites are the Mirador de Diamante, the Pailón del Diablo waterfall, and Laguna Amarilla.

This designation is anticipated to stimulate tourism, conservation efforts, and scientific research in the region. It also provides opportunities for international collaboration and funding for sustainable development projects focusing on tourism, culture, education, and environmental protection.

Local businesses, referred to as "geoamigos," offer lodging, food, and artisanal products. Visitors can engage in activities such as trekking, hiking, flora and fauna observation, and camping, allowing them to experience the area's diverse biodiversity.
