Peru's Osinfor, in collaboration with the University of Sheffield, is developing an AI-powered algorithm to enhance forest monitoring. This new version of the Selective Logging Detection Algorithm (ADETOP) aims to improve the identification of endangered timber species, such as shihuahuaco and tahuari, protected by CITES. The algorithm will analyze images from VTOL drones, which can monitor up to 300 hectares per flight, detecting illegal activities like selective logging in remote areas. The project, underway since June 2024, plans to optimize both the algorithm and drone technology by July 2025, strengthening Osinfor's capacity to protect Peruvian forests and combat illegal logging.
