In 2025, GUARD Archaeology unearthed significant archaeological remains at Carnoustie High School in Angus, Scotland. The excavation revealed a monumental Neolithic timber hall and a Late Bronze Age hoard.
The Neolithic hall, dating back to approximately 4000 BC, measured 35 meters in length and 9 meters in width. It was constructed from oak with opposed doorways. The structure is the largest early Neolithic timber hall ever discovered in Scotland.
The Late Bronze Age hoard included a gold-decorated spearhead, a bronze sword, and a well-preserved scabbard. These artifacts were wrapped in woolen cloth and sheepskin, suggesting deliberate deposition. The hoard was buried between 1118 and 924 BC.
Claire Herbert of Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Services described the find as "miraculous." Kathryn Lindsay, chief executive of Angus Council, highlighted the unexpected nature of the discovery. The excavation was funded by Angus Council.
The excavation site remains a focal point for archaeological research and public interest as of July 7, 2025. The artifacts are being studied to further understand the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods in Scotland.
