The Dieng Plateau has officially been designated as a National Geopark in 2025, marking the culmination of a decade-long proposal process. This designation is formalized by the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) No. 172.K/GL.01/MEM.G/2025.
The initiative to recognize Dieng as a National Geopark began in 2015, gaining momentum through various seminars and discussions, including one by the Geological Agency and Geological Museum of Bandung in June 2016. Experts have consistently highlighted Dieng's unique geological features, drawing comparisons to established Geoparks in America and Canada.
A National Geopark is defined as a unified geographical area with significant geological heritage and landscapes, encompassing geological diversity, biodiversity, and cultural richness. This designation is anticipated to foster land conservation and empower local communities, promoting sustainable development through conservation, education, and geological tourism.
