As of June 28, 2025, archaeological work is ongoing at the My Son Temple Complex in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam, focusing on Tower Group L. This project was approved on May 6, 2025, by Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong. The excavation is scheduled to last until July 30, 2025.
The My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, was the religious and cultural center of the Champa Kingdom. The sanctuary, built from the 4th to the 14th century, is associated with Hindu beliefs, particularly the worship of Shiva. The complex originally had over 70 structures, but only about 20 towers remain.
The excavation, led by Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Quy from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, covers 150 square meters. It involves collaboration with the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board, the Institute for Conservation of Monuments, and the C.M. Lerici Foundation from Italy. Initial findings reveal that Tower Group L has a unique two-story structure, built in the early 15th century.
Simultaneously, restoration projects for Towers E and F are in progress, supported by the Indian Government. These projects, initiated on February 21, 2025, aim to prevent further damage and restore the architectural integrity. The restoration efforts are expected to continue until 2029, with a budget of USD 4.85 million.
