Bedmap3: Unveiling Antarctica's Hidden Terrain with Detailed Map

Edited by: Tasha S Samsonova

Scientists have created the most detailed map of the land beneath Antarctica's ice, revealing a network of mountains, ancient rivers, deep valleys, and vast lowlands. This map, known as Bedmap3, was compiled using data from 277 ice thickness surveys, contributing 82 million data points. The map enhances details around the South Pole, the Antarctic coastline and Peninsula, and the Transantarctic Mountains, areas where previous surveys were lacking. Researchers say Bedmap3 provides crucial information for understanding the interactions between land and ice as Antarctica changes due to climate change, supporting computer models used to investigate ice flow across the continent as temperatures rise.
