AU Mission Seeks Reports on Sudan Violations

A fact-finding mission convened by the African Union (AU) has urgently called for reports of human rights violations in Sudan as part of its efforts to monitor and address the ongoing crisis. The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) Hybrid Joint Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) is seeking contributions from individuals, civil society organizations, and national human rights institutions to gather comprehensive documentation of rights abuses that have occurred since the onset of hostilities.

The mission emphasizes the importance of these contributions, stating, "Contributions are essential to the ACHPR's ability to document, report on, and respond effectively to human rights violations in Sudan." The appeal seeks detailed reports on a range of violations, including civil and political rights, such as arbitrary arrests, denial of fair trial rights, and suppression of freedom of expression.

Additionally, the mission is collecting information on socio-economic and cultural rights violations, such as access to essential services and cultural practices. It also highlights severe abuses, including enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings, particularly affecting vulnerable populations.

The ACHPR assures that all submissions will be treated confidentially, protecting the identities of contributors, especially in cases where disclosure could jeopardize safety. The deadline for submissions is set for February 2, 2025.

The mission's comprehensive approach includes requests for detailed incident descriptions, evidence, witness statements, and recommendations for measures to prevent future violations and ensure accountability for those responsible for crimes against international law.
