Gamburtsev Mountains: Ancient Antarctic Range Formed 650 Million Years Ago

Edited by: Anna 🎨 Krasko

The Gamburtsev Mountains in East Antarctica, buried kilometers beneath the ice, formed around 650 million years ago. Researchers Nathan Daczko and Jacqueline Halpin revealed the mountains' formation predates tectonic collisions. Despite continental collisions and gravitational spreading, a dense crustal root preserved the range. Analysis of zircon grains from sandstones revealed the mountains reached their peak 580 million years ago. The 'time capsules' were found hundreds of kilometers away in the Prince Charles Mountains. The mountains are preserved by a deep layer of ice, making them one of the best-preserved ancient mountain belts on Earth.
