Endurance swimmer Lewis Pugh is swimming around Martha's Vineyard, the location where "Jaws" was filmed, to advocate for shark conservation. Pugh, known for completing long-distance swims in every ocean, aims to change the public perception of sharks.
He began his 62-mile swim at the Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse. Pugh will swim for several hours daily in the cold water. He will also educate the public about the importance of protecting sharks.
Pugh emphasizes the need to respect sharks, highlighting that around 274,000 sharks are killed globally each day. He uses a "Shark Shield" device for protection. This device deters sharks using an electric field without harming them.
Marine biologist Greg Skomal notes that while "Jaws" instilled fear, it also inspired marine biology studies. He identifies commercial fishing as the biggest threat to shark populations. Skomal believes public perception is shifting from fear to fascination with sharks.
