Over 200 Animals Rescued from Overcrowded Kildare Home by ISPCA

The ISPCA recently rescued over 200 animals from a single property in Co Kildare, Ireland, revealing a severe case of animal overpopulation.

Inspectors discovered 207 animals, including 25 dogs, 95 rabbits, 58 guinea pigs, 22 hamsters, 4 mice, 1 terrapin, 1 turtle, and 1 corn snake, living in overcrowded conditions.

The rescue operation was initiated following a call to the ISPCA's National Animal Cruelty Helpline, prompted by concerns about the welfare of the animals.

Inspector Jimmy McCormack described the situation as a "serious animal overpopulation and overcrowding problem," noting that animals were being bred and retained, leading to an unmanageable number.

Inside the house, over 25 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, including puppies, were found in the kitchen, creating a noisy and stressful environment.

Hamsters, mice, a corn snake, a slider terrapin, and a musk turtle were also present.

An outside shed housed a large number of rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters in rusty, overcrowded cages with poor lighting and ventilation.

Although basic necessities were provided, the conditions were deemed inadequate, with several animals showing signs of respiratory issues.

The Dublin SPCA, Cork SPCA, and other animal welfare charities assisted in the large-scale rescue operation.

The residents cooperated fully with the ISPCA, acknowledging that the number of animals had become overwhelming.

Veterinary examinations revealed respiratory issues and overgrown nails in several small animals, and two rabbits with neurological issues were euthanized.

Chief Inspector Dowling expressed shock at the volume of animals in such a small space, emphasizing the importance of early intervention to prevent further deterioration of the animals' health.

The ISPCA encourages anyone with concerns about animal welfare to contact the National Animal Cruelty Helpline at 0818 515 515.
