Hundreds gathered in Marathon, Florida, to celebrate Earth Day with the release of Addie, a rehabilitated sea turtle. Addie was found near death in August and taken to The Turtle Hospital. She suffered from tumors and had a fishhook in her esophagus. Despite dying several times, Addie was revived and eventually recovered at the hospital. Turtle Hospital manager Bette Zirkelbach thanked supporters for their healing energies. Addie's release at Sombrero Beach marked a successful rehabilitation. Six of the world's seven sea turtle species are threatened or endangered. Sea turtles face dangers like fishing nets, debris entanglement, and plastic ingestion. Protecting sea turtles involves coastal cleanups and reducing plastic use. Avoid balloon releases and protect nesting beaches by shielding lights. Remove beach equipment at night and fill in holes to ensure safe nesting areas. Boaters should navigate slowly in near-shore waters.
