Sperm Whale Sighting Kicks off Citizen Science Month with Tethys Research

Edited by: Olga N

April marks Citizen Science Month, and Tethys Research Institute is leveraging citizen participation in its whale and dolphin conservation projects. A sperm whale, one of the large cetaceans that regularly inhabit the Mediterranean Sea, was spotted off Vallecrosia, Italy, on April 6. This sighting is a promising start to the season, especially within the Pelagos Sanctuary. For 38 years, Tethys has involved citizens in its research through weekly cruises from late May to October. Participants assist researchers in collecting scientific data by observing whales and dolphins. The Cetacean Sanctuary Research project, based in the Pelagos Sanctuary, will begin expeditions soon. No specific preparation or sailing experience is required, and participants will learn about research techniques and marine conservation.
