First Live Footage of Juvenile Colossal Squid Captured in Antarctic Waters

Edited by: Olga N

One of the largest and most elusive mollusks, the colossal squid, has been filmed alive in its natural environment for the first time. Researchers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute captured the footage near the Antarctic South Sandwich Islands. The juvenile squid, measuring nearly one foot long, was filmed 2,254 feet below sea level. The footage provides new insights into the life history of this mysterious animal. Scientists have been extremely limited in their research about the enormous creature. The colossal squid was first discovered in 1925. The high-definition footage captured on the Ocean Census expedition offered several insights into its other characteristics.
