A kayaker in the Strait of Magellan had a startling encounter when a humpback whale inadvertently engulfed him. According to wildlife scientist Vanessa Pirotta, the whale was likely feeding on krill or small fish and did not intentionally target the kayaker.
Pirotta emphasized that these whales are not equipped to hunt prey the size of humans due to their narrow esophagus and lack of teeth suitable for chewing. The Strait of Magellan is a popular destination for nature and maritime adventure enthusiasts, offering opportunities to observe humpback whales and kayak alongside dolphins. Despite the ordeal, the kayaker and his father remain committed to their passion and plan to continue kayaking.
