Bermuda Issues Whale Watching Guidelines to Protect Humpbacks During Peak Migration Season

Edited by: Olga N

Bermuda's Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has issued guidelines for whale watching to protect humpback whales during their peak migration season in March and April. As these whales travel from the Caribbean to northern feeding grounds, Bermuda's waters become a prime location for sightings. The DENR urges the public to maintain a distance of at least 100 meters (300 feet) from whales and to avoid swimming with them to prevent disturbance of feeding, nursing, and migration behaviors. It is illegal to harm, harass, or disturb humpback or sperm whales under the Protected Species Act 2003, with violators facing fines up to $25,000 or two years in prison. The public is encouraged to report any disruptive activity to the Fisheries Wardens or Coast Guard, providing details and photographic evidence if possible, to ensure responsible whale watching practices.
