Pembrokeshire Father and Daughter Admit to Animal Cruelty; Athenry Community Grows New Ecological Garden with Native Trees

Edited by: Olga N

In Pembrokeshire, Richard Scarfe and his daughter Brogan Scarfe admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to pigs, sheep, poultry, and dogs between January 2022 and April 2023. Richard Scarfe also violated a court order banning him from owning or keeping specific animals.

Pembrokeshire County Council's prosecution followed multiple visits revealing inadequate animal welfare, leading to veterinary intervention. Animals suffered from unsuitable enclosures, lack of food and water, and injuries due to overcrowding. Some animals were found dead. Authorities seized one cow, 26 sheep, 43 pigs, 23 poultry, and five dogs, providing them sanctuary and medical care.

Separately, in Athenry, the Community Council is developing a new ecological community garden by planting 1,000 native trees. This initiative, supported by Trees on the Land, aims to restore native woodlands and enhance green spaces. The new meadow will serve as an ecological amenity, promoting biodiversity and community well-being. The site will include garden allotments and aims to be a peaceful space for recreation and mindfulness.
