India is significantly ramping up its wildlife conservation efforts, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Key initiatives include the first-ever riverine dolphin estimation, revealing 6,327 dolphins across 28 rivers in eight states, with Uttar Pradesh leading in numbers. A new lion estimation cycle will begin in 2025, focusing on expanding conservation efforts to Barda Wildlife Sanctuary.
To combat human-wildlife conflict, a Centre of Excellence will be established at the Wildlife Institute of India. This center will equip Rapid Response Teams with advanced technology and enhance community capacity for conflict mitigation. The cheetah reintroduction program will expand to Gandhisagar Sanctuary and Banni Grasslands. A new project will focus on gharial conservation, alongside a National Great Indian Bustard Conservation Action Plan.
PM Modi emphasized the use of AI, Machine Learning, and geospatial mapping in conservation. He also encouraged the documentation of traditional knowledge for forest and wildlife management. These initiatives underscore India's commitment to wildlife preservation and sustainable coexistence.
