North Sea Wildlife Thriving: Dolphins, Whales, and Seals Return

Edited by: Uliana S. Аj

The North Sea is witnessing a resurgence of marine life, including bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales, and grey seals, offering hope for the region's ecosystem.

After decades of decline due to overfishing and pollution, conservation efforts are starting to show positive results:

  • Bottlenose dolphins and minke whales have been spotted in increasing numbers along the North Sea coast of England.

  • Grey seals, once at risk, are now thriving, with around 4,000 pups born last year in Norfolk.

  • The UK and Scottish governments recently banned commercial sandeel fishing to help marine species recover.

Experts attribute this recovery to enhanced protections for marine life, including new marine protected areas and fishing regulations. While challenges remain, the potential return of species like orcas and bluefin tuna sparks optimism for the North Sea's future.
