Wild Boars Roam St. Lucie Neighborhoods, Raising Concerns

Residents of St. Lucie County, Florida, are increasingly spotting wild boars in their neighborhoods, raising concerns about safety and property damage.

Jeffrey Bowles, a local resident, shared a video of a large wild boar he encountered, estimating it to weigh around 200 pounds. He noted that the presence of these animals has frightened both children and adults in the area.

"I got two young minors living with me," Bowles stated. "They won't even come out in the backyard." Many residents are hesitant to walk their dogs at night due to fears of encountering aggressive boars.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explained that increased development in areas like Port St. Lucie contributes to more frequent wild boar sightings.

Patrick Sullivan, a field technician with Animal Rangers Inc., reported that his team has removed over 70 wild boars from the Tradition area in the past two years. He emphasized that the current mating season is causing boars to be more aggressive, making encounters potentially dangerous.

Sullivan also highlighted the ecological threat posed by these invasive animals, which can harm native species such as gopher tortoises by destroying their burrows and consuming their eggs.

Despite the challenges posed by wild boars, Bowles acknowledged that they still have a right to live in the area.
