As artificial intelligence demands ever more energy and traditional sources seem limited, one company proposes to turn the usual logic on its head: instead of running wires to computing centers, place them where sun and wind are abundant.
Envision Energy has made the Fortune Change the World list for the third time 2026. The recognition came for the Mission Gobi project — an attempt to create 5 GW of "green" computing capacity in the world's arid regions by 2030. The first flagship — the Envision Galaxy campus in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia — is designed for more than 2 GW and up to a million chips at once, powered predominantly by wind and sun.
Fortune notes that the 2026 list brings together companies tackling global social and environmental challenges. Alongside Envision are Alphabet, Anthropic and CATL. For Envision this is an evolution: from innovations in renewable energy in 2021 to zero-emission industrial parks and green hydrogen technologies in 2024, and now to the direct fusion of AI and energy.
The essence of the approach is simple and at the same time radical. Instead of adding load to already overburdened grids, the company proposes to build computing where energy is cheap and abundant. Deserts and steppes, previously considered "problematic" for infrastructure, are turning into new centers of abundance. According to founder and CEO Lei Zhang, "AI advances intelligence further, and green energy is capable of advancing civilization even further."
For investors and those thinking about personal finances, this is a signal: future wealth is increasingly born at the intersection of technologies and resources that were once considered secondary. Money invested in companies able to turn "useless" lands into sources of energy and computation can yield returns that are not only financial but systemic — changing the very idea of where and how value is created.
The project shows that limitations are often a matter of perspective. Where previously only emptiness was seen, now an opportunity is seen for new forms of capital and infrastructure. Envision is not merely adding capacity but redrawing the very map where energy and intelligence reinforce each other.
