Us Republicans Propose 5% Tax on Remittances, Mexico Condemns the Initiative

Edited by: Elena Weismann

Us House Republicans have presented a tax plan that includes a proposed 5% tax on remittances sent to individuals abroad.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has rejected the initiative, calling it unfair and discriminatory. She emphasized that Mexicans living in the US already pay taxes.

The Mexican Senate also protested the proposal, warning of unjust double taxation on migrant workers' income. They argued that such a tax could discourage the use of regular channels for sending remittances.

The Mexican Congress's Board of Political Coordination (Jucopo) also requested that Republican legislator Jason Smith's proposal be canceled. They consider the measure an attack on the dignity of migrants.

Legislators warned that approving such a proposal could lead to the use of less secure means of sending economic resources. They affirmed that the measure is not only inadmissible but also violates the values expressed by most nations.
