The governor of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, Gustavo Melella, has expressed his "deep concern" regarding the national government's recent announcement. This announcement eliminates tariffs on imported mobile phones and reduces internal taxes on televisions and air conditioners.
According to Melella, this measure represents "a very hard blow for the Fuegian industry". He claims it directly responds to commitments made by the national executive within the framework of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The electronics industry of Tierra del Fuego has historically been one of the main economic engines of the province. This is due to a development model based on the industrial promotion regime that encourages national production. The governor assured that the provincial government, together with the workers, will continue defending local production.
