US Tax Refunds Average $3,170, Up 3.9% from Last Year

The IRS has processed 88.5 million federal income tax returns as of March 28, 2025, a slight decrease of 0.3% compared to the same period last year. The agency has received over 89.5 million returns, down 0.8% from 2024. Electronic filing accounted for 86.8 million returns, split between tax professionals (46.3 million) and self-prepared filers (40.4 million). The IRS has issued 61.5 million refunds, a 1.2% increase from the previous year. The average tax refund amount is $3,170, marking a 3.9% increase from last year's $3,050. In total, the IRS has issued over $195 billion in refunds, a 5.1% increase compared to the $185.6 billion issued by the same time in March 2024.
