Norway Plans Temporary Ban on Cryptocurrency Mining Data Centers

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

On June 22, 2025, Norway announced plans for a temporary ban on new data centers using power-intensive cryptocurrency mining methods. This initiative aims to conserve electricity for other industries. The proposed ban could take effect in autumn 2025.

The government, led by the Labour Party, aims to limit cryptocurrency mining due to its high energy consumption. The closure of a Bitcoin mining facility in Hadsel in September 2024 led to a 20% increase in electricity bills. The facility consumed 80 GWh annually, equivalent to 3,200 households.

As of June 22, 2025, Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at $101,265.00 USD, down 0.84% from the previous close. The ban has sparked debate, with the government prioritizing national interests and the crypto sector highlighting potential economic benefits.
