Ethereum developers are now planning the next major chain upgrade, Fusaka, following the successful deployment of Pectra last week. Pectra, the largest code change since the Merge in 2022, aimed to ease staking, improve wallet accessibility, and boost transaction efficiency.
Fusaka will include the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) called "PeerDAS," designed to help the network support larger transaction data "blobs". These blobs, introduced during the Dencun upgrade, reduce congestion and lower gas fees by storing data off-chain. PeerDAS would allow validators to download partial data from blobs, potentially reducing layer-2 transaction costs.
According to Parithosh Jayanti, a devops engineer at the Ethereum Foundation, PeerDAS is crucial for scaling layer-2 solutions. Fusaka is scheduled for release at the end of 2025 but could face delays, as seen with Pectra, which was postponed multiple times. Ethereum developers have faced criticism for slow protocol changes, impacting the network's token price and developer migration.
