Ethereum's EIP-9698 Proposal: Aims for 100x Gas Limit Increase to Boost Scalability

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

Ethereum Foundation researcher Dankrad Feist proposed EIP-9698 on April 27, suggesting a 100-fold increase in Ethereum's gas limit. This proposal could theoretically boost the blockchain's transactions per second (TPS) to 2,000, enhancing Ethereum's scalability and competitiveness.

The "deterministic gas limit growth schedule" would commence around June 1 at epoch 369017. It involves a gradual increase of the gas limit by a factor of 10 over approximately two years, followed by a final tenfold increase. If approved, the EIP would expand the current gas limit of 36 million to 3.6 billion, potentially allowing around 6,000 transactions per block.

This initiative follows a recent decision by Ethereum validators to raise the gas limit from 30 million to 36 million in February. The last adjustment to Ethereum's gas limit occurred in August 2021 during the London hard fork, which doubled the limit from 15 million to 30 million.
