Kuwait Bans Bitcoin Mining Citing Energy Concerns and Legal Violations

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

Kuwait's Ministry of Interior officially banned Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining on April 22, 2025, citing excessive power consumption and violations of national regulations. The government stated that crypto mining operations are unauthorized and breach existing laws.

Authorities noted that crypto mining violates Kuwait's penal code, IT regulations, industrial laws, and municipal rules. These operations place an unsustainable burden on the nation's electrical grid, potentially threatening public safety. The Ministry of Interior has urged all individuals and organizations involved in cryptocurrency mining to cease operations immediately, or face legal consequences.

This action reinforces a broader ban issued in July 2023 by Kuwait's Capital Markets Authority, which prohibited all major crypto-related activities, including payments, investments, and mining. The directive was designed to align Kuwait with global anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CFT) standards.
