Brazil Considers Allowing Salaries to Be Paid in Bitcoin

Edited by: Elena Weismann

Brazil is considering a new measure that could allow employees to receive up to 50% of their salaries in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, provided both the employee and company agree. Proposed by Luiz Philippe, a former federal deputy, the measure excludes freelancers, expatriates, and the self-employed, focusing on formal employment contracts. While not mandatory for businesses, it offers a legal framework for Bitcoin payments. The proposal must pass through Brazil's parliamentary process, including approval by the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate, before presidential evaluation. Brazil has already shown a crypto-friendly stance, with platforms like Binance licensed to operate there and the central bank developing a digital real. The measure aims to boost Brazil's cryptocurrency economy by attracting foreign investors and offering more payment options, though concerns about volatility and acceptance remain.
