Ethereum's Holesky Testnet Achieves Finality Amid Pectra Upgrade Delays

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

Ethereum's Holesky testnet achieved finality on March 10 at approximately 3 p.m. ET, marking a crucial step despite previous delays and technical challenges related to the upcoming Pectra upgrade. This upgrade, the largest since The Merge in 2022, was initially slated for March 2025 but has been postponed to allow developers more time to address technical issues encountered during testnet deployments. Holesky, activated over two weeks prior on February 24, had faced network instability until recently. A sister testnet, Sepolia, experienced issues on March 5 due to an error with custom deposit contracts, later attributed to a cyberattack. The next step involves a "shadow fork" to further refine Holesky. The Ethereum Foundation has not yet announced a new release date for Pectra, pending further assessment of Holesky's performance. Meanwhile, Ethereum's ETH cryptocurrency has seen a 10.0% decrease in the past 24 hours and a 52.5% year-on-year decline, according to CoinGecko data. The Pectra upgrade aims to enhance Ethereum's scalability, efficiency, and staking capabilities, including allowing gas fees to be paid with cryptocurrencies other than ETH and increasing the staking limit from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH.
