Uphold Relaunches Crypto Staking in the US Amid Regulatory Shift

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

On March 3, 2025, cryptocurrency exchange Uphold relaunched its staking services in the United States, citing a more favorable regulatory environment. This decision follows a similar move in the United Kingdom in early February. Uphold customers in the US can now earn staking rewards on 19 crypto assets, including Ether (ETH), Cosmos (ATOM), and Polkadot (DOT), with weekly payouts in the staked cryptocurrency. The relaunch is attributed to the SEC dropping multiple crypto cases and a perceived shift towards a more blockchain-forward approach in the US. CEO Simon McLoughlin noted that the company had previously suspended staking due to regulatory uncertainty and significant SEC fines, such as Kraken's $30 million penalty. McLoughlin also highlighted the influence of individuals like Hester Peirce and Paul Atkins in shaping a more sensible crypto policy.
