UK businesses embrace freelancers to address AI skills gap and hiring challenges

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

In June 2025, UK businesses are increasingly hiring freelancers, especially for AI skills, to overcome hiring challenges.

A Fiverr survey indicates that 35% of companies save over £33,000 monthly by using freelancers. Demand for AI expertise drives this trend, with 38% of businesses seeking AI-skilled workers and 20% relying on freelancers.

Freelancers are benefiting, with nearly half reporting increased earnings and 44% charging premium rates. However, concerns about AI automation and outdated regulations like IR35 persist. The shift is evident in workforce composition, with full-time workers at 55% and freelancers at 22%.

Michele Tropeano, Fiverr UK Country Manager, highlights the need for modern policies to support the evolving workforce. This shift underscores the need for policies that support this new way of working.
