Judge Rules Anthropic's AI Training on Books is Fair Use, Except for Pirated Copies

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

U.S. District Judge William Alsup ruled that Anthropic's use of copyrighted books to train its AI model, Claude, is legal under fair use. This decision is a win for the AI industry.

However, the judge also found that Anthropic infringed on copyrights by copying and storing over 7 million pirated books. A trial is set for December to determine damages.

The ruling addresses the debate over using copyrighted materials for AI training. Anthropic, supported by Amazon and Alphabet, argued its use was transformative. The case highlights ongoing legal issues in AI and copyright.
