India has assembled a panel of experts to evaluate the effectiveness of its copyright law in addressing disputes related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). This action occurs as AI platforms face increasing legal challenges concerning potential copyright violations.
The expert panel, comprised of eight members, is tasked with scrutinizing the legal and policy ramifications of AI's integration with copyright issues. Their work includes assessing the Copyright Act of 1957 and proposing necessary revisions to the government.
Several Indian news organizations, such as NDTV, Indian Express, and Hindustan Times, have voiced concerns about AI platforms utilizing their content without proper authorization. Meanwhile, companies like OpenAI assert their AI models are trained on publicly available data and provide options for websites to opt-out of data collection. The Delhi High Court is currently hearing a copyright infringement case filed by Asian News International (ANI) against OpenAI. The next hearing is scheduled for March 18, 2025.
