OpenAI Reportedly Developing Visual Social Network to Rival X, Driven by AI Image Generation

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly developing a visual social networking platform, potentially rivaling Elon Musk's X. The platform is in its early stages, with an internal prototype featuring a social media feed centered around ChatGPT's image generation capabilities launched in March 2025.

The prototype allows users to create images, including logos and anime-style illustrations. The popularity of the image generation feature caused OpenAI's servers to temporarily crash in March, with CEO Sam Altman even changing his X profile picture to an AI-generated image.

The potential social network may be launched as a standalone app or integrated within ChatGPT. OpenAI's move comes amid a rivalry between Altman and Musk, with both anticipating that social media platforms can give them an edge in training and marketing their AI products. Meta is also reportedly working on a standalone app for its AI chatbot, Meta AI.
