Indian Billionaires See Significant Wealth Decline in 2025
In early 2025, the combined wealth of India's wealthiest individuals experienced a significant decrease, totaling $30.5 billion (Rs 2.63 lakh crore). This downturn is primarily attributed to corrections in equity markets and global trade friction.
Key Figures and Their Losses
Mukesh Ambani, holding the title of Asia's richest person, saw his net worth decrease by $3.42 billion, positioning him at 17th place on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a total of $87.2 billion. Gautam Adani's net worth also experienced a notable decrease of $6.05 billion.
Shiv Nadar, the founder of HCL Technologies, experienced the most significant loss among Indian billionaires, with a substantial reduction of $10.5 billion. Savitri Jindal's fortune diminished by $2.4 billion, while Dilip Shanghvi of Sun Pharma saw a decrease of $3.34 billion.
Shares of Sun Pharma declined by nearly 11% due to regulatory pressures and weaker earnings. The Sensex and Nifty experienced declines of approximately 4.5% year-to-date, influenced by factors including Trump's tariffs and global economic uncertainties.
Midcap and smallcap indices experienced even steeper declines, plummeting over 14% and 17%, respectively. High valuations and concerns about a global slowdown drove foreign institutional investor outflows, further intensifying the market downturn.
