Following testimony from whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams, Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has called for Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism. Wynn-Williams, a former Meta employee, alleges that Facebook (now Meta) jeopardized American interests by collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Wynn-Williams, who served as Meta's director of Global Public Policy, testified on April 9, 2025, that Meta provided the CCP with custom-built censorship tools, potentially allowed access to U.S. user data, and censored a Chinese dissident. She also claimed that Zuckerberg was personally invested in Meta's relationship with China, even taking weekly Mandarin lessons. Hawley stated that the American people deserve to know the truth about Meta's actions, especially regarding AI and emerging technologies. Meta denies the allegations, stating they do not operate in China and that Wynn-Williams' testimony is divorced from reality.
