US Corporations Contracted 48GW of Clean Energy, Driven by Data Centers and AI

U.S. corporations have contracted nearly 48GW of additional clean energy since February 2024, according to an S&P Global report. Data centers and technology companies account for almost all of this growth. The report indicates a 66.4% increase in contracted clean energy capacity between the 2024 and 2025 updates. The technology and web services sector contributed approximately 92% of the new capacity. This surge is fueled by the expansion of artificial intelligence, with projections estimating data center energy consumption will nearly double to 800TWh by 2030. Texas leads in corporate-tied clean energy capacity, holding 27.6% of the total. Nuclear energy accounts for 43% of the 47.3GW year-over-year increase, including traditional and small modular reactors (SMRs). S&P has recorded 20GW of nuclear deals since February 2023, all linked to the technology sector. Solar energy represents 49.1% of the corporate U.S. clean energy capacity, while wind accounts for 23.9%.
