Volvo Launches EX90 Electric SUV, Pioneering Superset Platform

Volvo has officially launched its new EX90 electric SUV, marking a significant milestone as the company's flagship electric vehicle. This model is designed to compete with premium SUVs like the Rivian R1S and features Google's Android Automotive software.

The EX90 is the first vehicle to utilize Volvo's Superset platform, a comprehensive tech stack intended for all future electric models. This platform is expected to underpin upcoming vehicles, including the ES90 luxury sedan and the EX60.

Volvo's Chief Technology Officer, Anders Bell, discussed the company's approach to software-defined vehicles (SDVs) during a recent interview. He emphasized that the EX90 is designed from the ground up to be a digital-first vehicle, integrating advanced computing capabilities with the Nvidia Orin NX processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon for enhanced user experience.

Bell noted that the vehicle is built to allow over-the-air updates, which will benefit 2.5 million existing cars globally this year. The software-defined approach aims to provide continuous improvements and new features over time, ensuring that the car evolves with customer needs.

The EX90 is positioned as a leader in the shift towards software-defined vehicles, a concept Bell describes as a fully integrated system where every component can be updated and enhanced through software.

In addition to the EX90, Volvo plans to introduce further features, including wireless Apple CarPlay, in upcoming over-the-air updates.
