Ciudad de México, January 17, 2025 - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump held a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding TikTok, a move interpreted as an effort to preserve the popular social media platform.
Trump announced on Truth Social that the discussion was beneficial for both nations, expressing optimism about resolving various issues promptly.
The dialogue occurred shortly before the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed a federal law prohibiting TikTok's operation in the U.S. market due to national security concerns. This law is set to take effect on January 19, 2025.
Although current users will retain the app, they will not receive updates, and app stores will be barred from offering it, potentially rendering TikTok inoperable over time.
The Department of Justice stated that restrictions will commence on Sunday, but no immediate sale of the app is anticipated as ByteDance refuses to divest.
While Trump, who has over 14 million followers on TikTok, has shown reluctance towards the ban, some Republican senators are pressing for ByteDance to proceed with a sale. However, ByteDance remains firm against selling, complicating negotiations due to Chinese laws restricting algorithm sales.
The U.S. government argues TikTok poses a national security risk, a claim the company disputes, describing the law as an unfounded attack.
The Biden administration hopes the law will compel ByteDance to reconsider its stance, leaving American users facing an uncertain future regarding the platform.
