Pound Sterling Achieves Strongest Monthly Gain Since Late 2023

Edited by: Elena Weismann

The British pound has shown significant strength, achieving its best monthly performance against the U.S. dollar since late 2023. Sterling rose by 0.3% to $1.3345, driven by investors moving away from U.S. assets throughout April. The pound is on track for a 3.1% gain this month, its largest since November 2023. Meanwhile, the euro also saw substantial gains, appreciating by nearly 2% in April. This marks its most significant monthly increase since December 2022. The euro's rise is attributed to a broader shift away from the dollar, benefiting major currency pairs. Analysts predict approximately 85 basis points in rate cuts by the Bank of England this year. This mirrors expectations for cuts from the U.S. Federal Reserve. The UK's relative protection from tariffs may offset fiscal challenges, boosting confidence in sterling's future performance against the euro.
