Sotheby's London is set to auction the personal collection of Pauline Karpidas, a renowned art patron often called "Europe's Peggy Guggenheim." The sale, scheduled for September 17th and 18th, is estimated to exceed £60 million ($81.02 million), marking the highest estimate ever placed on a single-owner collection by Sotheby's in Europe.
A public exhibition will open on September 8th at Sotheby's Bond Street galleries, offering a preview of the exceptional artworks. The collection showcases Karpidas's discerning taste and international influence, featuring pieces by celebrated artists such as René Magritte, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dalí.
Karpidas, who spent decades building her collection through close relationships with artists and dealers, began her journey in 1974. Her residences, particularly in London and on the Greek island of Hydra, have served as vibrant showcases for Surrealist and contemporary works.
Karpidas expressed her belief in being a temporary custodian of these creations, feeling it's the right time for her London home's pieces to find new custodians. The estimated value of £60 million surpasses Sotheby's previous record, set by a 2011 anonymous sale estimated at £45 million.
The upcoming auction promises to be a significant event, offering a glimpse into a world of art, friendships, and collaborations. It is a testament to Karpidas's passion and dedication to the art world.
