A watercolour painting by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, depicting the French village of Bouleternere, sold for £150,200 at a Lyon & Turnbull auction. The artwork, created in 1925, showcases the hillside town with a unique artistic perspective.
Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret Macdonald, relocated to south-west France in 1923 seeking a more affordable lifestyle. The painting was created during their time in the Pyrenees-Orientales, capturing the charm of the organically grown town with its prominent church.
The artwork was previously owned by Ronald WB Morris, an executor of the Mackintosh estate, after a memorial exhibition in Glasgow in 1933. John Mackie, Head of Sale at Lyon & Turnbull, described the watercolour as an "amazing" piece, highlighting its significance in Mackintosh's artistic evolution during his final years.
