Bhutan's First Wines to be Auctioned by Bonhams, Featuring Rare 'The Himalaya' Bottle Estimated at $80,000

Bhutan, a small South Asian country known for its carbon-negative status and pristine environment, is venturing into viticulture. The Bhutan Wine Company, founded in 2017, is releasing its first wines, with an exclusive collection set to be auctioned by Bonhams from April 3-24. The auction features 48 bottles, including a unique 7.57-liter bottle named 'The Himalaya,' after Bhutan's highest unclimbed peak, Gangkhar Puensum. Estimated at $40,000 to $80,000, this large-format bottle is the only one of its kind available commercially, with another reserved for the King of Bhutan. The buyer will also receive a trip to Bhutan with cultural and wine experiences, plus priority access to future vintages. Wine critic Jancis Robinson has described the initial wines as 'promising.' Bonhams highlights the auction as a rare opportunity for collectors to explore a new wine terroir.
