Eravikulam National Park: India's Top Park

Edited by: Елена 11

Eravikulam National Park in Kerala, India, has been recognized as the nation's best national park. It achieved a remarkable 92.97% score in the Union Ministry's Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) for the 2020-2025 cycle. This evaluation assessed 438 protected forest areas nationwide, highlighting Kerala's exceptional park management.

Eravikulam shares the top spot with Dachigam National Park in Jammu and Kashmir. A significant factor in Eravikulam's success is its role as a sanctuary for the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. This mountain goat species is found exclusively in this region.

The park is also home to approximately 20 rare Kurinji species, including the iconic Neelakurinji. The Neelakurinji blooms only once every 12 years, with the next bloom expected between August and October 2030. This offers a unique spectacle for visitors.

Located within a UNESCO World Heritage site, the park's pristine ecological integrity further enhances its standing. Eravikulam is also Kerala's first eco-friendly, disabled-accessible ecotourism destination. It features a ferry system, visitor centers, solar-powered amenities, and accessible trails.

The park reopened on April 1, 2025, after its annual closure for the Nilgiri Tahr calving season. Visitors can explore the Rajamalai region, with scenic trekking trails through shola forests and grasslands. Guided treks are available to explore the park's unique biodiversity.

This recognition underscores the transformative power of science-led and sustainable park management. It reaffirms Eravikulam National Park's status as a natural treasure and a model for conservation efforts. The park is celebrating its golden jubilee, marking five decades of dedicated wildlife preservation.
