South Kalimantan's Meratus Geopark has been officially designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This recognition marks a new chapter for South Kalimantan in global tourism management and environmental preservation. It also empowers local communities. The announcement was made alongside Kebumen Geopark, bringing Indonesia's total to 12 world-class geoparks. The UGG designation is considered a strategic move to introduce South Kalimantan's geological and cultural wealth internationally. It also presents a significant opportunity for green economic development. Hanifah Dwi Nirwana, an expert at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, congratulated the management and the people of South Kalimantan. She emphasized that this achievement should be a collective effort to sustainably preserve and promote Meratus. Hanifah hopes that UNESCO status will open doors for investment and job creation. It should also strengthen South Kalimantan's local identity on the world stage. The official UNESCO Global Geopark certificate is scheduled to be presented in September 2025. Meratus has undergone rigorous assessments, including documentation, assessor visits, and international feasibility tests. Indonesia's Ambassador to UNESCO, Mohamad Oemar, warmly welcomed the designation. He sees it as proof of Indonesia's contribution to preserving universal geological heritage. It also reflects the country's commitment to global education and local empowerment. Geoparks from China, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam were also designated during the session.
