The Axarquia region is experiencing a significant boom in rural tourism this Semana Santa, with bookings soaring by 37% compared to last year, according to Ruralidays.com. This increase indicates a growing preference for authentic cultural experiences in the region's picturesque towns. Malaga province is particularly popular, boasting almost 70% occupancy during the peak Easter period (Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday) and 64% for the entire week. These figures surpass the Andalusian average of 63% and 57%, respectively. While Semana Santa is traditionally a busy time for Spanish travelers, international visitors are contributing significantly to this year's increase. The most sought-after municipalities in Axarquia include Torrox, Nerja, and Frigiliana. Velez-Malaga, Competa, and Almachar are also attracting visitors, drawn by their rich cultural and religious traditions, especially the captivating Semana Santa processions.
